Cold and Flu Season: Can CBD Oil Help? - Leaf Remedys

Most of us have been there: fever, the chills, and all around feeling lousy. The seasonal flu is no joke! And now, we have newer viruses that have proven to be stronger and more resilient against conventional medicine.

It can be pretty scary. Especially for those with weak immune systems or underlying health conditions.

This is why many people are wondering: Can CBD help with seasonal flu symptoms? Is CBD good for the common cold? And are there any studies involving CBD and COVID-19?

These are great questions, and we’re going to explore them all.

CBD oil and Flu season

If you’ve had the flu, you know how debilitating it can be. Fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, weakness, sore throat, body aches, stuffy nose, diarrhea, coughing, headache, the list goes on.

But there are other symptoms that arise because of influenza: Depression, insomnia, anxiety, and in severe cases, psychosis.

To date, there are only a couple of studies regarding the flu and cannabinoids like CBD. In one study, scientists stated that, “Cannabinoids are profoundly anti-inflammatory and impair many Ca2+-dependent enzyme systems which are central to inflammatory and cell-autonomous antiviral responses.” Which means, cannabinoids showed to be beneficial [¹].

But in some cases, certain cannabinoids led to worsening symptoms.

Still, it’s hard to ignore that scientists even agree that “Cannabinoids are profoundly anti-inflammatory.

That said, there are other benefits of CBD that some people believe could help with flu-like symptoms.

For example, there are multiple studies regarding CBD and anxiety, CBD and insomnia, CBD and depression, and other mentally-taxing conditions.

This is worth exploring, given that high quality CBD is a natural, less invasive approach than pharmaceutical drugs.

Now let’s talk about...

The common cold and CBD

Like the flu, the common cold often causes similar symptoms. In fact, seasonal allergies symptoms and having a cold often go hand-in-hand. There’s sneezing, coughing, runny nose, chills, and sometimes even a fever.

But one study found that cannabinoids like CBD could help with persistent viral infections  [¹]. More studies are needed, but it’s interesting to see that the properties of CBD really help reintroduce balance in the human body.

This brings us to our next point…

CBD and immune support

Having a healthy immune system protects us from pathogenic invaders. Yes, genetics definitely play a role in the strength of your immune system, but so do diet, stress, exercise, sleep, hygiene, and overall lifestyle.

That said, some people are simply fortunate to be born with an abnormally strong immune system, which may explain why those people never seem to get sick. Lucky them!

But for those who don’t have an extraordinarily strong immune system, taking over-the-counter medications or turning to natural remedies may help boost their immune system and ease their unwanted symptoms.

That said, studies show that CBD can affect certain functions of our body’s immune system, thus keeping it active even when it’s not functioning like it should [²].

So, what about COVID-19?

CBD and COVID-19

The truth is that many doctors, scientists, and other medical professionals are still very much in the dark regarding the prevention of COVID-19, beyond vaccines of course.

We are definitely in uncertain times, but maintaining a healthy lifestyle filled with a clean diet, exercise, proper sleep, and practicing mindfulness and less stress, are all steps in the right direction.

The last thing you want to do is to be stressed out or anxious about getting sick. Believe it or not, stress, anxiety, depression, and lack of sleep can wreak havoc on your immune system.

Which brings us to our last point…

Scientists have pushed for a study to explore whether CBD isolate and full spectrum CBD oil can reduce COVID-induced stress, anxiety, depression, anger, and sleep disturbance [³].

While the results are not yet published, we can expect to see them at the beginning of 2022.

CBD benefits: the bottom line

The flu, COVID, and common colds are never good news. But as we can focus on improving our lifestyle as a whole, we can ultimately build our immune system to help fight against those unwanted viruses and pathogens.

In the meantime, high quality CBD is definitely worth trying. And we only recommend you purchase CBD products from reputable brands.

The effectiveness of your CBD oil greatly depends on its quality and source.
