CBD for Athletes: Does CBD really help with muscle recovery? - Leaf Remedys

Something interesting is happening in the CBD industry…

More and more professional athletes are endorsing CBD brands and swearing by its therapeutic effects.

We can’t say we’re surprised. After all, multiple studies confirm CBD’s therapeutic properties.

But we understand if you, as an athlete, are a bit skeptical.

So let’s break down a couple of CBD facts for you…

Is CBD psychoactive?

No.

CBD will not get you “high”. In fact, studies show CBD actually counteracts the psychoactive effects of THC (the cannabinoid responsible for those mind-altering effects) ⁽¹⁾.

Benefits of CBD for athletes

Now, a lot of athletes have wondered how they would feel after taking high quality CBD. While that’s a legitimate curiosity, the truth is you may not feel a certain sensation like you would with THC or even pain medications.

Instead, we encourage you to pay attention to what you don’t feel.

For example, many athletes battle with anxiety, panic, fear, and of course, muscle soreness and stress. However, not feeling those symptoms is the very reason they’ve become CBD advocates in the first place.

That said, let’s see what a few professional athletes have to say about their CBD experience…

Professional athletes and CBD

David Ahrens, a former NFL linebacker for the Indianapolis Colts, stated in an interviewed by Men's Health Magazine ⁽²⁾:

“I enjoyed a 10-year playing career [from 1981 to 1990]. I have taken more pain pills in that time than most people have in their lifetime…. In the beginning of my career, it was handed out like candy. We had to play. There was no care about player health—only your performance was important.” He went on to say, “I wish I had known about the benefits of CBD much earlier…”

In 2019 he stated: “I don’t need pain meds like I used to…”

Another athlete who found CBD to be very therapeutic was Gabby Douglas, the first African-American gymnast in Olympic history ⁽³⁾.

She said: "My experiences in using CBD have led me to believe that I could have been more pain free throughout my gymnastics career if CBD had been allowed…”

Then there’s Clifton Lyles, adventure racer and team captain in the World’s Toughest Race: Eco Challenge Fiji ⁽⁴⁾.

Here’s what he had to say: “I’ve been focusing on recovering in a way that’s good for my body. And for the last several months, [CBD] has been really key for me… It allows my body to do what it needs to do to fully recover; increasing blood flow and getting things moving so that I can train everyday if I need to.”

Finally we have Riley Cote, NHL winger for the Philadelphia Flyers ⁽²⁾. He said: “I quickly realized [CBD] wasn't just helping with my brain health, but it also added another dimension to my sleep, and its subtle calming nature helped with anxiety… ”

He also said: “It’s very clear to me now that there is a much better and more sustainable way to manage what I call the recovery process… It doesn’t matter who you are. We all have to manage these things to live a higher quality of life without taking a bunch of pharmaceuticals that typically create dependency and addiction."

CBD for athletic performance

We could’ve easily spent this whole article sharing with you study after study regarding CBD’s benefits. Instead, we believe the proof is in the puddling.

The athletes we mentioned above are just a drop in the bucket. There are many other professional athletes who have become CBD advocates.

It’s hard to turn a blind eye to CBD’s therapeutic properties. Even scientists agree that CBD holds tremendous value when it comes to reintroducing balance into the human body.

With that said, we encourage you to give CBD a try, but not just any ol’ CBD product. We’re talking about high quality hemp-derived CBD products, like Leaf Remedy’s CBD gummiesand CBD Cooling Gel Relief Roll-on. You never know, it may be just what your body’s been longing for.
